Dental Exams and Cleanings

Exams and regular cleanings are an important part of dental care. Cleanings should be performed every 3-6 months to reduce tartar build-up, gum inflammation, and keep your teeth healthy and strong.

Dental exams are crucial as they detect the small things before they become big things. We do comprehensive exams—examining the head, neck, jaw, mouth, teeth, gums, intra-oral and extra-oral soft tissues, and mouth cancer screening—and utilize the latest technology for your oral examination.

Gums and Periodontal Disease

Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the gums and bone that support the teeth caused by the bacteria in plaque (the sticky, nearly clear film that constantly forms on your teeth). While seldom painful and frequently free of any obvious signs or symptoms, periodontal disease can progress undetected to the point where supporting bone is destroyed. Some options for treating periodontal disease include scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) and/or placing antibiotics (called Arestin) in deep pockets located in and around the teeth.

Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ)

Constant facial pain or migraines may be due to a TMJ problem. Stress on the TMJ causes the muscles to become overworked, which in turn become sore and lead to migraine headaches. We offer our patients night guards and an FDA-approved NTI device to prevent you from clenching and/or grinding your teeth when you sleep. Botox treatments to the jaw are sometimes also prescribed to alleviate pain.

Tooth Extraction

Sometimes a tooth cannot be saved. Often severe pain accompanies these problems, and extraction can relieve the pain. Our doctors are very experienced with tooth extraction and are able to relieve the pain and discomfort caused by a tooth that needs to be removed. .

Second Opinions / Consultations

Sometimes it is helpful to get a second opinion. The dentists at Zephyr Cove Dental Center are happy to provide a complimentary consultation to discuss the treatment plan prescribed by your current dentist. Just bring the x-rays and the existing treatment plan. Second opinion consultations do not include new x-rays.

Dental Fillings/Cavity Repair

Our new technology allows a tooth to be filled with a strong, chemically bonded material that can be matched to the color of your tooth making it appear nearly invisible. Research has proven that a tooth with this type of filling is almost as strong as a natural non-cavity healthy tooth—a silver filling is only 40-50% as strong as a normal tooth.

Do you suffer from tooth loss? Millions of Americans have lost teeth due to tooth decay, gum disease, or injury. For many years, the only treatment options were bridges and dentures. But now, dental implants are available for qualified patients.

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots. They offer a strong foundation for both permanent or replacement teeth. Implants may also be used to secure dentures and partial dentures in place, making them much more comfortable.

Root Canals

A root canal can be needed when decay has reached the root or nerve of the tooth. Sometimes an infection in the roots can be excruciating—a root canal will remove the infection.

First, an opening is made in the tooth’s crown, and the pulp chamber and the root canals are cleaned and shaped for filling. The root canals are then filled and sealed with a rubber-like material to ensure they are completely sealed. In most cases, a filling is done to close off the opening, though in some cases, it is better to close off the tooth with a full crown.

The loss of a single tooth can have a major impact on your dental health and appearance. When one or more teeth are missing, the remaining teeth can shift out of their normal position and make you susceptible to decay or gum disease. A non-removable bridge can restore your teeth to normal function by replacing missing teeth. It will improve the entire health of your mouth by keeping the surrounding teeth in position and can also help maintain the structure of your face and jaw.

A denture is a tooth replacement option when replacing a full arch. Dentures are removable and are crafted to provide the tooth shape and color you desire.

New advances have been made in the materials used for dentures and how they are designed. If you already have dentures (partial or full arch), you may be experiencing a loose fit or denture slipping. This can lead to gum sores that can affect your chewing and your speech and decrease your confidence when speaking or laughing with others. We can also provide denture re-lines if needed.

Crowns, Onlays, Inlays, and Veneers

A crown will restore a broken, heavily filled, or cracked tooth to its original size, shape, and tooth color. A crown may be recommended after root canal therapy has been completed, as the tooth tends to be brittle and is more apt to fracture.

A crown can strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure and improve the appearance of your teeth. With the advances in technology, we now have the ability to build all-porcelain crowns.

Onlay and inlays are partial crowns. These restorations allow the doctor to be more conservative and preserve more of the original tooth.

Veneers are thin porcelain coverings that offer a painless solution for stained, chipped, discolored or misaligned teeth. They can even be placed over existing crown or bridgework without having to replace them. This cosmetic procedure can have a dramatic effect on anyone’s smile.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Invisalign is a modern approach to straightening teeth using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you! These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable, and virtually invisible plastic that you simply wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements your dentist or orthodontist plans out for you. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You simply pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks until your treatment is complete and you achieve the confident smile that you’ve always wanted—virtually undetectable!
